Sweet and sour pork

Sweet and sour pork is one of the most widespread and well-known Chinese recipe in the world.  Today recipe for those who want to try cook it at home.

Ingredients For Sweet and Sour Pork(for 4 persons):

  • 350-400 g (12,5- 14 ounces) pork fillet, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 150 g (1 ¼ cup) cornstarch
  • 2-3 medium bell peppers different colors (red, orange, yellow, green) pilled and cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 cm (½ inch) fresh ginger, pilled and finely sliced
  • 1 medium onion, pilled and medium diced
  • 3-5 cloves of garlic, pilled and chopped
  • 150 g (1 cup) can pineapple chunks, drained off
  • 1 medium carrot, pilled and finely sliced
  • 4-6 Tablespoon sunflower oil

For marinade:

  • 1 yolk
  • 2 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • 125 ml (½ cup) cold water

For sweet and sour sauce:

  • 2-3 Tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 Tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoon sugar
  • 2 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoon cold water
  • ½ Teaspoon cornstarch

Let’s get started!

  1. Make marinade. In a medium bowl whisk yolk, soy sauce and water. Place cut meat into a marinade and leave for 30 minutes at the room temperature.
  2. In half hour coat the pork with cornstarch. Heat 2-4 tablespoons sunflower oil in a large frying pan on high heat and fry pieces of pork about 3-4 minutes each side, until evenly browned. Drain on paper towels.
  3. Make sweet and sour sauce. In a medium bowl mix together tomato paste, rice vinegar, sugar and soy sauce. In a small bowl mix together ½ teaspoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water.
  4. Heat 2 tablespoons sunflower oil in a large frying pan on high heat. Add garlic and fry for 30 seconds. Gradually add onion, ginger, carrot, bell pepper and pineapples. Thoroughly mix and fry for 3-5 minutes. Add sweet and sour sauce, thoroughly mix, reduce the heat to medium and stew for 5-7 minutes. Add water with cornstarch and thoroughly mix. Add meat, mix well and stir until sauce becomes thicker.
  5. Serve while hot. Sweet and sour pork might be served by itself or with cooked rice or noodles.
